What is Hanukkah: All you need to know
Hanukkah is a jewish festival commemorating the rededication of the second temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire. It is also known as the Festival of Lights.
Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar. The festival is observed by lighting the candles of a candelabrum with nine branches, called a menorah. One branch is typically placed above or below the others and its candle is used to light the other eight candles. This unique candle is called the shamash. Since the Chanukah miracle involved oil, it is customary to eat foods fried in oil. The Eastern-European classic is the potato latke (pancake) garnished with applesauce or sour cream, and the reigning Israeli favorite is the jelly-filled sufganya (doughnut).

Other Hanukkah festivities include playing the game of deride and eating oil-based foods, such as latkes and sufganiyot, and dairy foods. Since the 1970s, the worldwide Chabad Hasidic movement has initiated public menorah lightings in open public places in many countries.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has tweeted in Hebrew to greet the people on the occasion of Hanukkah.

International Human Rights Day is observed on December 10 annually. The main aim behind celebrating this day is to improve the physical, social, cultural and spiritual well being and welfare of the vulnerable group of people globally.

Human Rights Day 2019: History and significance

On this day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. However, on December 4, 1950, the United Nations General Assembly invited all its member states and other interested organisations to formally establish the Human Rights Day. Since then every year the member states of the United Nations and other countries observe December 10 as the 'Human Rights Day'.
In 1993, an autonomous public body, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India, was established for the protection and promotion of human rights, which works on rights relating to life, liberty, equality and dignity of an individual.
UDHR is regarded as one of the world's most profound and far-reaching international agreements. It is an inalienable right which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinions, national or social origin, property, birth or belong from other status.

Human Rights Day 2019: Theme

According to the official website of the United Nations, today is the 71st anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the theme of Human Rights Day 2019 is Youth Standing Up for Human Rights.
Eleanor Roosevelt once said "Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home -- so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. [...] Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world."
On this Human Rights Day, here are some popular quotes which you can use in conferences, debates, meetings and cultural events to discuss the human rights violations.
